Natural Building

A cordwood and cob greenhouse in progress at Shagbark Farm.

2024 was our sixth year at Shagbark Farm, and we are still in the process of constructing the buildings and infrastructure we need to run a fully-functional off-grid educational farm. Our construction techniques prioritize ethically harvested materials, resiliency against intense storms, simplicity of construction and affordability. We believe sustainable, safe and beautiful structures should not be expensive and should be available to everyone, not just the wealthy who can afford these specialty building methods. We continue to demonstrate this is possible with our buildings.

This year, our main building project was upgrading one of the cabins on the farm. This structure demonstrates various natural building techniques like timber framing, cob construction, living green roof, and natural stone foundations. In 2025, we will be running workshops to practice building a natural clay floor, cordwood walls, and a super efficient wood stove called a rocket mass heater.
